slow down short solid infill paths / small solid infill areas
Feature request
Please consider adding an option to automatically slow down solid infill when the solid infill paths are very short or when the solid infill area is narrow/small.
For example:
- Slow down solid infill below a chosen path length
- Slow down solid infill inside narrow regions
- Optional speed percentage for short solid infill strokes
- Optional minimum path length threshold
- Possibly separate controls for solid infill and top solid infill
Problem
Solid infill does not behave the same in every area of a print.
On long, open solid infill runs, the nozzle has time to stabilise and the extrusion usually lays down smoothly.
But on narrow solid infill areas, the toolhead can move very quickly side-to-side over short distances:
stop → accelerate → stop → reverse → accelerate → stop → reverse
In those short strokes, the extrusion pressure does not have time to settle. Material can build up too much in the narrow area, making the solid infill look rough, over-packed, or lumpy. Then when the nozzle moves into a longer open section, the extrusion smooths out again.
This can affect surface quality and can also affect the layers above, because the rough solid infill creates an uneven base.
Why current controls are not ideal
At the moment, solid infill speed is mostly controlled as one feature speed. Lowering solid infill speed globally can help, but it also slows down large open solid infill areas that do not need slowing down.
The issue is not simply “solid infill speed is too high.” The issue is that short solid infill strokes behave differently from long solid infill strokes.
A 5 mm back-and-forth solid infill stroke does not behave the same as a 100 mm solid infill line, especially with larger nozzles or high-flow hotends.
Proposed behaviour
Add an optional setting such as:
- “Slow down short solid infill paths”
- “Short solid infill path threshold”
- “Short solid infill speed percentage”
- “Apply to top solid infill”
- “Apply to internal solid infill”
Example:
- Solid infill speed: 80 mm/s
- Short solid infill threshold: below 15 mm
- Short solid infill speed: 40 mm/s or 50%
This would allow the slicer to keep normal solid infill speed on long stable runs, but slow down small trapped/narrow regions where pressure build-up and over-packing are more likely.
Why this matters
Modern printers, larger nozzles, and high-flow hotends make this issue more visible. A large nozzle can lay down clean solid infill on long runs, but the same settings can produce rough, over-packed results in short narrow solid infill areas.
This is not just a visual issue. Rough solid infill can affect the layers above it and reduce the quality of the final surface.
The slicer already knows the length of each generated extrusion path, so it should be possible to apply a different speed to short solid infill paths without slowing the entire solid infill feature globally.
Summary
Long solid infill paths and short solid infill paths do not behave the same in real printing.
A feature to slow down only short/narrow solid infill areas would improve surface quality without unnecessarily slowing down the whole print.
