Sphinx extension incompatible with sphinx 9

https://github.com/sphinx-doc/sphinx/issues/14089#issuecomment-3757372524 We're using `add_autodocumenter` which is now deprecated without replacement. Let's follow the discussion over at the Sphinx repo, and pin to `<9` in the meantime.
