I'm headed to Montreal this weekend to play in the Montreal Jazz ultimate frisbee tournament. Hopefully, I should also catch some of the jazz festival itself. I wish that I could afford Chick Corea tickets, but alas, I cannot. Hopefully I'll be able to catch some of the free shows.
I would ask if any Montrealers wanted to get a beer, but I don't know what my schedule is going to be like at all. So, instead, I'll just ask if anybody else is going to the festival?
Inside stuff be unrelated, yo. Music, books, GPL, and those f*$%ing redsox.

I'm picking up with some random team from University of Guelph. What a strange name for a school. I hope they don't all suck, but I'm glad I found a team to pick up on.

I went back to the DMV and got myself a Connecticut license. It looks spiffy, with a painting of a lighthouse on Long Island Sound in the background. My picture, unsurprisingly, sucks.

Chick Corea rocks, as do Eric Dolphy and Roy Hargrove. They're my newest borrows from the library, along with Pat Metheny. I also took out Chaos, by James Gleick, and the autobiography of Gandhi. They both seem good, judging from the first 50 pages.

Can I use the card face images from a GPL poker program in my program if it's non-GPL? Is that considered "linking", or can I just include the images as GPL and use them in my program? All this licensing shit confuses me. I emailed the author of the program asking for an exemption, and he said that I can only use them if they're GPLed.
I don't even know how I'm going to license my program, but I don't want to be tied to GPL if I can avoid it.

It's a pretty good book with some interesting things in it. I'm up to the part about turbulence. It's really a great overview.

I don't find the book particularly well written so far, but fortunately I'm tremendously interested in the subject matter, so I've enjoyed it. I can tell that he likes the topic, but the beginning is repetetive in places.

I'm not in Montreal this year, so I can't go out for a beer or two.. but I was last year, and the free shows are well worth it. Just walk around the St. Catherine/St. Laurant (I think it was St. Laurant.. maybe a couple streets west of there.) area where all the free stages are set up and you're sure to find something good playing.

I'm sure the free stages will have good music, and I'll be so tired after ultimate anyway, that I'd probably enjoy anything. Furthermore, I've spent a decent amount of time in montreal, and I love the city, so it should be a good time.

My only worry is that the people I'm travelling with won't like jazz, so I may be watching the shows alone. Wouldn't be the first time, but hopefully I can find somebody who digs the music to hang out with.

A lot of the music (at least at the free stages) isn't really what I would consider jazz, which is why I enjoyed it (I'm not a fan of jazz music, myself.) A lot of it was just really good live music. Try and drag your friends there at least one day, they'll probably like it even if they don't like jazz.

The Jazz festival is basically a wonderful excuse to play non rock/hip hop/country/classical music that you would not otherwise get a chance to hear. Just go and hang out - you're guaranteed to have a good time.

Wow, that festival snuck up quick. A few friends and I were planning to get there one of these years, but it looks like this isn't the year.

Oh well. At least you'll be having fun. I think I have to cut down a crabapple tree this weekend anyways.

Goddamn Sox. Two nights in a row where errors = runs. 7.5 back. I can't friggin' take it anymore. After tonight I might take a weekend off from watching baseball just to lower by BP. I'm getting grumpy.

I worked on and off for a guy cutting down trees when I was at school. It's a tiring job whose only benefit is that you get to look at the big stump and say "I did that". Oh yeah, and it's dangerous. Fortunately, he was the one who climbed into the tree to hack limbs of with the chainsaw, while I stayed below and held the rope to direct the limb, then cut it up into manageable parts.

As for the Red Sox, I keep flipping channels when I'm watching them now, because I get so nervous that I can hardly watch the game. Last night I was watching it in a bar full of mostly Yankees fans, and I had to work hard to keep myself calm as Wake's beautiful outing got thrown away.

As for the Jazz festival, I think it's gonna be a lot of fun, and I'm sure that the free acts (which are numerous) will be enjoyable to watch. I'm going down there with a girl I met recently playing frisbee and a kid who I went to high school with, but hadn't seen until a couple weeks ago, so it's an interesting crew. I should have some good stories when I get back.
