llimllib's Diary

What a win from the French side! They won against England 2-1 with 2 goals in stoppage time. I wish it was on TV in the USA so I could have watched Zidane's goal...thank god the bbc put it on the net.

Inside, why I hate the English footballers enough to root for the French.

Why do I hate English football side? Because in the last world cup, UK commentators were so derisive and insulting towards a US team that surpassed England's performance by a mile. Those bastards deserve to have their hearts broken like this.

Also, does anyone know a site that will stream the highlights of the game? I'll search for it later.

Anyway, off to play some ultimate.

for the National Anthem. (You shouldn't be so hard on us. Its not lack we haven't suffered you know...sob)

Everyone seems to know the score
They've seen it all before
They just know
They're so sure

That England's gonna
Throw it away
Gonna blow it away
But I know they can play
Cos' I remember

Three lions on the shirt
Jules Rimet still gleaming
30 Years of hurt
Never stoppped me dreaming

So many jokes, so many jeers
But all those oh so nears
Wear you down
Through the years

But I still see that
Tackle by Moore
And when Lineker scored
Bobby belting the ball
And Nobby dancing

Three lions on a shirt
Jules rimet still gleaming
30 Years of hurt
Never stopped me dreaming

I know that was then
But it could be again

I think it comes to something when this is still six or so years on recognised as the definitive England supporters song.

It's not lack of suffering that makes me hard on UK football, it's how you treated us when those few US fans finally got some victories to be proud of. I can't imagine that the French were any nicer, or less arrogant (hah), but I can't read their language, so they got away with it.

Peace.

I have no idea which commentators you can be talking about. Both the Beeb and ITV for that matter were both effusive in their praise for the American squad at least when I was watching.

I should also say that I didn't get to watch the games on TV, so I couldn't hear those announcers praising the US, and I read most of the negative articles because they were pointed to in an article specifically about English commentators bashing the US. Thus, my opinion is highly biased. Oh well, such is life.

It was some newspaper columnists whose columns were posted to the web. I read about three of them, and I remember that there were more in the article.

Nothing against English people personally, it just makes me want to root against the football team.

The US isn't a footballing nation, and when it comes down to it they don't really care. Wins are wasted on them.

We are not crazy as a footballing country, on this you are correct. However, the whole nation doesn't care about wins in any one sport. Basketball? most of the country doesn't care. NFL football? Most of the country watches the final for the advertisements, and doesn't care. When it comes down to it, for every sport, some of us care and some don't.

I don't know about you, but I found the game to be completely unfair. It was even at times, but France was never able to get past England's defense.

A completely absurd foul in a very dangerous position (Zidane loves that position) and then a retarded pass from Steven Gerrard to Thierry Henry the very next minute... plus Beckham missed a P.K.

It was a surprise the way it happened.

I wouldn't count England out anyway. Croatia and Switzerland looked HORRIBLE in the other match of the group. Shouldn't be a problem to beat them Both and expect France to do the same.

On the other hand, Portugal is pretty fucked up. Russia is not an easy match and they will have a hard time with Spain. I think they depend on Greece not winning a second match.

France is one of, if not the, best teams in the world, so losing to them is not a huge surprise. However, the cool thing is that England was winning until there were 3 minutes left in the game. In those three minutes, England let France not only tie the game, but take the lead and win.

Losing 3 games in the world cup does not imply that a team is not of the highest caliber. It does imply that they imploded, that they had poor strategy, and that they had poor coaching, but the French team is certainly one of the best in the world.

what a match (none / 2) (#12)
by Timo Laine on Sun Jun 13th, 2004 at 06:17:10 PM EST
http://www.timoroso.com/

This was essentially boring soccer most of the time, with only three highlights: England's goal, the save from Beckham's penalty by Barthez and Zidane's goal from the freekick. The single big mistake in the game was the unbelievable blunder by the Gerrard-James duo that resulted in the penalty for France.

I don't think either team deserved to win this one, but England lost only because of their own mistakes. Beckham had the chance to clinch the match with his penalty. England couldn't stop Zidane's brilliant freekick, though, but there is no reason they couldn't have secured a draw.

I was pretty neutral about the match myself. But I don't like ultra-defensive tactics, even when they are effective, as Eriksson's tactics were (at least initially). I don't like bad finishing either, and I expected more from Henry and Trezeguet. But I am still quite happy that even if most of the match was pretty boring, at least there was drama. It reminded me a bit of the Champions League final with Bayern Munich and Manchester United and maybe also of the Euro 2000 final. This was not a classic match, but I think it's still an example of why it is so easy to be passionate about the sport. Your squad can work like a clockwork for 99% of the match, and you can still lose. That is utterly, totally and without question unfair, and it is also one of the reasons why this is more than a sport, and perhaps more than life itself for many people.

OK I'm biased (none / 3) (#14)
by CtrlBR on Sun Jun 13th, 2004 at 06:38:26 PM EST

But France deserved to win, something like 70% of the match happened in England's half of the field and this alone proves that France dominated head and shoulders the match... How many time did Owen get the ball again?

On the other side since most of the guys from the two sides plays in something like 4 clubs (Arsenal, MU, Chelsea and Real Madrid) it was really fun to see them playing tricks on their teammates...

I think that's just strategy. Although France controlled the ball, Eriksson was in total control of the match until the dramatic end. Maybe he knows his catenaccio from his time in Lazio.

True (none / 1) (#24)
by GenerationY on Mon Jun 14th, 2004 at 04:52:42 AM EST

Indeed, England's standard mistakes are (a) defending far too deep; (b) pointless long balls to forwards of diminutive stature and (c) running around like headless chickens.

In the whole we kept those tendencies in check reasonably well although obviously there was a lot of (c) by the end of the game.

I also think we may be overlooking the fact that Owen as a marked man in every sense of the word was at least tying up defenders through his off the ball play. Zidane was quiet through much of the game but had a similarly inhibitory effect on Gary Neville's relatively recent (but welcome) tendency to support of attack down the right wing.

Just for that, I'm gonna make sure that we take the ball home from Iraq. Lets see you play that game without a fucking ball.

What these days with the oppressive claws of multinational corporations combined with the US's self-serving international agenda allowing it to push use its influence in places where frankly it has no right to be. This is the cruel legacy of capitalism and something we're all going to be spending a lot of time getting out of in the near future, mark my words.

by skyknight on Sun Jun 13th, 2004 at 06:30:58 PM EST

other nations whose international agendas are not self serving? Are we to believe that France and Russia were against the war in Iraq solely on humanitarian grounds, as opposed to their huge financial interests in Iraqi oil and weapons sales debts? The cruel legacy of capitalism... As opposed to the magnanimous history of communism? Soviet and Chinese experiments with communism killed tens of millions of peasants, a toll far exceeding the number of Jews who were snuffed out by the Holocaust...

Your problem is not that you are too cynical... Rather, you are only half as cynical as you need to be. What you bemoan is not anything uniquely American, but rather something that is all too human, as thousands of years worth of history has shown.
