since it's my diary and all. Right now, users vote on stories +1, +1 front page, or -1. If the story reaches +95, it's posted. If it reaches -20, it's deleted. If, after 36 hours in the vote queue, it stays somewhere in the middle, there is some formula relating to the average comment rating in the story that determines whether it gets posted or not.

In my opinion, this magic formula should be replaced by just posting any story that managed to live that long.

my problem is when a story gets 700 votes, 380 for and 320 against, and then dies in the queue. I think that is unfair to story authors. If that many people liked the article, and it was so controversial, I would like to see it post. Most of the stuff that I'm glad doesn't post gets to -20 without a problem.

Lots of crap stories die just like that. :) Also, it's not like you can't browse the top-level comments right now, just by substituting 'comments' for 'story' in the URL. So deletion is a bit harsh as a term for what happens to dumped stories.

the fact is, most of what goes on here is crap. front page or otherwise, for example, silent chris' story, kitten's recent story, even, god help me, some of turmeric's recent stuff.

that doesn't post remain visible for direct links (and still with the in-queue status). That way, it doesn't get googled/indexed (because you need to be logged in to see queue stuff - though this has been a bug as of late; some dumped stories behave just as I just described), doesn't reflect poorly on the site, and we still have a way to continue every discussion.

have something like a "view dropped stories" option, available only once logged in? Could work, I suppose, and I'd like it - not all dumped stories are that bad, it's a shame to waste a good discussion at times. Of course, all the crapflooding would end up in there too, perhaps you could set a lower score limit for stories that you'd like to see, or an average rating so (-20/1000, = -0.02) is better than (-9/10 = -0.9) for example.

No extra options. Just that if you come across a thread somehow, or were involved in it before - you'll still see the story it's attached to. And so will anyone else logged in. But there's no need to publicize it further.
