We Need Diary Ratings + Programming mental block (Diaries)

llimllib's Diary

We really need diary ratings. Also, frisbee tournament this weekend and my programming impotence.

Part Numbered 1:

We really should have diary ratings. Seeing splitpeasoup's diary containing the top 3 diaries of the day reminded me of this, when it allowed me to see DU's excellent diary about playing go against a badly aging mathematician. All I would want to see would be a list of all the diaries of the past 24 hours, in order of their ranking.

I would write up a rant about this and post it as meta, but it appears to me that nobody has any power to change this site right now, so it would accomplish nothing.

Part Numero 2:

My team is going to play in the finals of our frisbee league this weekend. Last night, we won our conference championships, making us 1 of the top 2 seeds out of 64 teams. Winning is awesome.

Part 3 Number:

I have been totally unable to program for the past 3 weeks or so. Not sure if I'm depressed, burned out, or just psyching myself out, but damned if I can even open a file of code for more than a few minutes. I have a couple of interesting projects to work on, so it's not a problem of inspiration. Any suggestions? What do you do when you feel this way?

Programmer's block (5.00 / 1) (#9)

I see programming as a means to an end.  If the end isn't exciting enough, I won't do it.

However, I've been diddling around with other issues for weeks now, even though I have something I really would like to get working.  So far I've narrowed the problems down to concerns about protecting what I write, and the need to specify what I want to do very clearly before I start.

For the latter issue, it often works to make diagrams of data structures, or write pseudo code, which is much more attuned to finding and fixing mistakes than actual code.

I've also found that the less focused I am on something, the more I have to document it.  Right now I'm writing pages and pages on how to manage a B-tree, which is about 90% standard algorithms, and 10% strange new features.

Hmm, let's think about this (5.00 / 2) (#7)

And the top ten diaries everyday wouldn't end up being written by the trolls and crapflooders who have multiple dupe accounts?

In principle, I agree with you. In practice, I don't know if there is a good solution.

well, let's try it at least (none / 0) (#8)

I'd like to try it before we condemn it as unfeasable. I think a lot of the users of this site are lurkers who will rate up good, serious diaries better than trolls who rate their own diaries up.

Peace.

I'm going back to school for a year and a half. I think that ought to reset my brain. Also, try getting outdoors and not thinking about the modern world. I like to mountain bike or run to attain this mental state. Reading a book can be good too.

How diaries work. (5.00 / 2) (#2)

Diaries work on an individual-rating system. The way it usually works is that individuals bookmark/watch their favourite diarists (eg, I have kaugrego bookmarked) and when new diaries from the Good Ones turn up, I see them.

Unless I'm not checking k5. But whatever. :)

but how do you find good new diaries? (none / 0) (#4)

It would be significantly easier to find good new diarists if you saw, for example, that some day somebody had posted a very highly-rated diary. As far as I can see, diary ratings would provide at least some benefit, and no negative effects.

Peace.

Or, rather, word of keyboard. :)

I just told you about kaugrego, for example. The diaries are a community.

I don't want to encourage this stupid idea by voting either way.

why is it stupid? (none / 0) (#3)

Why would a diary rating system be bad, in your opinion?

Because we have enough ratable things. (5.00 / 2) (#5)

What next, rating users? We need certain unratable freedoms.
