No more NT! (Diaries)

llimllib's Diary

I am encouraging users of this site to discontinue the practice of signalling in any way that their post has no text. Think about it people, how overused is this? Can there be anything more cliche?

I encourage you instead to post messages in the body of your message which are irrelevant, incoherent, intolerable, or any combination of the three.

Proper use of the subject line (5.00 / 2) (#23)
by swr on Fri May 30th, 2003 at 05:10:01 AM EST

Even worse than "[nt]" is the practice of putting half a sentence into the subject line, then putting the second half of the sentence into the body of the post. It is jarring to read, and more importantly, makes the threaded view useless. Here's an example pulled at random from that "Disturbing plans at Camp Delta" story:

  • Sorry by trhurler, 05/27/2003 03:39:58 PM PST (3.00 / 3)
    • Well... by kaemaril, 05/27/2003 04:01:04 PM PST (3.57 / 7)
      • Actually, by trhurler, 05/27/2003 04:06:41 PM PST (3.50 / 4)
        • Well... by kaemaril, 05/27/2003 09:07:58 PM PST (4.80 / 5)

Any guesses what that thread is about? I'll never know, because I'm not going to bother to click on "Well..." or "Actually...".

People, please understand what the subject line is for. It is not just a smaller body. It should actually describe the subject of the post. That is why it is labeled "Subject:".

As for [nt]... if you can't be bothered to post an actual post, reconsider whether or not it is worth posting at all.

summaries in the subject (3.50 / 2) (#26)

i'm right there with you buddy.
usually i hold off on labelling a subject line until i've finished the post, then i just make the subject line something that kind of summarizes in a phrase. (logical, right? i hope.)

NT and reply-in-subjects are both really annoying plagues. do people actually view the site in threaded mode anyway? personally i prefer nested...

Without the (n/t), and browsing in dynamic threaded, I have to, for fear of missing an enlightening missive :-)
