I mean, since nobody else is writing an interesting diary that I can leave comments in, why don't I write one? I guess that means I'll have to be interesting then. Let's see...interesting...interesting.

Thoughts:
Why are there only about 4 diaries this morning?
ESR is a high IQ snob, to put it mildly.
I was my brother's sponsor for confirmation this weekend. The Bishop performed the service, and he mentioned meditation and Thomas Merton in his homily, which surprised me. He was the first person I'd describe as intellectual that I've ever met associated with the church. I talked to him afterwards, he seemed quite affable, well read, and well rounded. I wish I had some time to really pick his brains.
Kasparov drew against X3D Fritz. He played a brilliant game 3 to follow up a very poor game 2 in which Fritz even showed a bit of strategic legs. games 1 and 4 were drawn, and I haven't examined either. From my perspective, the most interesting bits of the tournament came in game 3, when Fritz just could not play to its advantage because its strategy lay more than 20 moves down the road. Instead of playing like it should have, it lay back and did nothing, allowing Kasparov to set up his pieces just like he wanted. Even when Kasparov had a huge advantage, Fritz only calculated a small one.
Perhaps somebody will write an MLP on this tournament?
Designing web pages sucks and is boring. I always forget this and agree to do people's webpages. Stupid me.
Is this interesting yet?
SquirrelMail seems to have a bug, as it is truncating a c++ file I attached to an email. The file is definitely all there in the mailbox, but squirrelmail won't let the whole thing be downloaded. This is a pain, since I can't print from my machine. Stupid Netware.
B-Tree deletion is hard.
The UConn Huskies are going to win the national championship (men's college basketball, for the heathens out there). By the end of the season, Emeka Okafor will be absolutely unstoppable, and will force other teams out of the lane at will. As a Connecticut product, that's the only interesting sport we have in the state, so we're all crazy about UConn. Should be a good year. Oh, and they beat Yale but had a moderately tough time. Early season jitters, I say.

Therefore, the girls have not been in the diary. Two weekends ago, I went to Marist to visit my friend for his 21st birthday (pics), and last weekend, I went home to visit my family for my brother's confirmation. During the week I really don't talk to girls, because I have so much work, so I haven't had much to say.

What version of squirrelmail are you running? My webhost has an old version, and they won't upgrade any time soon, so I have to put up a buggy threaded mode. Squirrelmail is a really great idea. At some point, I'm just going to run an IMAP server + squirrelmail on my home box and use email that way. I just gotta switch to a DSL provider that gives me a static IP. Dyndns is cool and all, but even though I refresh my record every 20 minutes, it still gets out of sync.

ESR comes off like a nerd that always had enough other nerds around to adulate him that he never realized that the vast majority of the human race doesn't give a shit about fetchmail. However, I like the idea of using the glider pattern as the "hacker" icon.

Today is going to be a really rough day at work. This morning the power kept going out in my apartment building, which means now I can't ssh in to my homebox. That means no IRC, no mp3s, no nothing but just boring work.

Next semester I'm signing up for a language-design class and a networking class. I just finished the last lab in my operating systems class. Can I get a merit badge now?

Anyway, I wish the whole k5-vs-Husi thing would end. I really don't like how most of my favorite diarists are now somewhere else, but this site still gets good stuff too. Maybe scoop oughtta include some kind of distributed-hash-table¹ diary ghetto where diaries are RSS'd from anywhere in the extended family to everywhere else. That'd be pretty rockin'.

Ok, any more content here, and I'll need to post a diary of my own.

Fetchmail == overrated (none / 1) (#15)

I wrote a replacement that does about 70 percent of what fetchmail does (and 100 percent of what I needed it to do) in about an hour.

I think that was less time than the fetchmail download, compile, and configuration would've taken.

I'm not bragging. I consider myself a good but not great programmer. I don't think it's that tough of a problem to solve, except for certain pathological cases that I'm sure fetchmail handles that my program doesn't. But why tote around that complexity when I clearly don't need it?

SquirrelMail 1.4.1. Since I don't have a desktop machine, I can't bring all my email to one consistent spot, so I have to leave it on my servers, but what you talk about sounds pretty ideal.

Agree about the nerd stuff; he probably just doesn't ever see anyone that's not a hacker. As for a "hacker" icon, if people want to adopt it, then fine. I'm not going to, I don't need a logo (I mean, hell, my name rhymes, what more do I need), but it doesn't bother me.

those sound like fun classes, I'll be taking Operating Systems next semester. How was your OS class structured? did you like it?

Eh, whatever, I've been to HuSi, they seemed pretty cliquish there, and I didn't feel like sucking up to whatever people are there. If they enjoy it, then fine, but K5 is more comfortable for me.

We used the Tanenbaum "Modern Operating Systems" book and another intro-to-unix book. We had five labs total, covering stuff like writing shell scripts, building homemade version of unix utilities like fgrep and wc, using pipes and sockets, and mastering the fork() function.

Husi is the k5 suburbs.

is the fun part. Moving all of the content in to the new style is the part that sucks.

The majority of my family lives in CT, so when they come to the house this Thanksgiving, I'm sure I'll hear all about it. They're bigger fans of the women's b-ball than the men's tho. I pay attention in March when the brackets come out. It's fun to take completely blind guesses.

I'm no artist, I'm an engineer. I agree that moving the old content to the new site is what sucks most, but design mostly sucks too. It makes me so frustrated, because I have a picture in my head that I inevitably can't get into Photoshop. Maybe the pictures in my head suck too, and I just don't know it. I'd like to try and practice art for a while, see if I could get good at it.

I'm sure you will hear about the Huskies over Thanksgiving. As for the women, I didn't mention them basically because it's so obvious that they're #1 with a rocket, they probably won't have an interesting game until Tennessee comes into town. It is really cool that they're both preseason #1s; now if the guys can win it all again, that would be the best thing ever.

Nope, she's still there, and she's the main reason the women continue to be #1. She is really incredible. Geno Auriemma called her possibly the greatest women's basketball ever; This is high praise from the coach of Jen Rizzotti, Rebecca Lobo, Kara Wolters who has also played against all of the great women of the modern era.
