I'm looking for a web hosting company for my friend's band. We're looking in the $10-$20 a month range. I don't want a Windows box, but that's about all the requirements I have.
Do you have a host you're happy with? A host you wouldn't recommend?

I've found a few web providers a bit dodgy regarding mp3s, even when they're origional, such as a bands page would contain. But that was a while ago, is it any better nowadays?

I recommend edgehosting, which is the paid hosting arm of edgenetwork.

Edge is run by 5 guys at various colleges (myself at UIUC, Purdue, etc). We have 11 some odd servers for the network, and 2 for the commercial hosting portion (actually there is a 3rd, but its dedicated to just one hostee). I'd recommend ourselves because we're johnny on the spot with support requests.

Gentoo/Red Hat/FreeBSD are the boxes we run on. We support PHP 4.X, Perl 5.X, MySQL 4, Postgres, et al. We're real flexible with stuff you need installed, as long as its not an extravegant request, we'll probably put it on the server.

your javascript popups on this page cause a whole bunch of critical javascript errors on the same browser. It pops up the window, but it's covered by the js warnings window, which you have to close to get to your window.

1) the left-side elements on your front page do not properly line up on firebird 0.7/linux.
2) on your cpanel demo, the logout button is pushed off to the right side of the screen. At least, it was the first time I hit the site, then a reload fixed it. odd.

I may go with you, it looks like a good deal.

That's the first I've heard of it. My friend just signed up about a week ago with them. I do know that they are moving to a dedicated server tonight. Other than that I have know idea why that would be.

They've provided excellent service since September without a hint of downtime. $4 gets you 300 megs and 5.5GB transfer. I found my first host (turboweb.net) through an ad on K5 and they sucked, but tch has been excellent. Turboweb bit the dust btw.

but I certainly do. And I would think that anyone who is comfortable using Unix would want shell access to a server they were hosting files on. It makes a lot of tasks much easier. And, since there are many hosting companies that do offer them, it is not an unreasonable thing to ask. Of course, if you wouldn't have a use for it, don't pay for it.

Thanks for the sideways suggestion that I'm not comfortable with UNIX. Anyway, I've never felt a need for shell access. Cpanel and phpmyadmin have always worked for me, I'm just curious what you do that couldn't be accomplished with those tools.

check in easily from any computer (remote launch putty) and even make changes when necessary. Also, I can write server side scripts for automatic back-up, etc and run them as cron jobs.

Admittedly, part of it is just wanting as much access to and control over my files as possible.

Re-reading my previous post, I apologize. I didn't mean to insinuate that you didn't know what you were doing. It's just that, when my files are sitting on a Unix server, the fact that I am very familiar with Unix makes me want to be able to pop my head in and make sure everything is going okay.

You should give cpanel another look. It has a full file manager and you can create cron jobs but it sounds like you wouldn't need to in this case - cpanel can tar up your files and send a backup to your server via ftp, on a schedule.

It's web based, so it can run on any browser. I haven't investigated its accessibility features but I'd be surprised if it had features that posed a problem for the disabled.
